Family Centers of Door County operate from several host sites (Washington Island Recreation Center , Northern Door Children’s Center in Sister Bay, Door County YMCA in Fish Creek & Sturgeon Bay and the Town Hall Building in Maplewood) providing programming geared to the needs of the individual communities. Programs span from youth outreach to senior networking.

The FEMA Emergency Food and Shelter Program was created in 1983 to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies, both nonprofit and public, in an effort to help people with economic ( i.e., fire, floods, tornadoes) emergencies. The EFSP funding is open to all organizations helping hungry and homeless people. Funds must be used to supplement feeding, sheltering, rent/mortgage and utility assistance efforts only. The Local Board Chair for Door County is the United Way of Door County.

Habitat for Humanity

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. More than 23 houses have been built for families in Door County by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

Sunshine House is a diverse community service organization whose purpose is to achieve full participation in the community of people with special needs. Today the services that are offered include personal care, transportation, work services, supported employment and activities.
